ATTI mode: what it really is, and the acro myth

Two beliefs get pilots into trouble: that ATTI is the switch you reach for when GPS fails, and that it turns a camera drone into an acro machine. Both are wrong, and the second one is wrong in a way that produces exactly the wrong reflex.

The rescue-switch myth

When the satellite fix collapses, a common instinct is to reach for ATTI as though it were a lifeboat. It is not a lifeboat. ATTI is not something you switch to in order to survive interference — it is the state the aircraft falls into when it can no longer trust its position. By the time you would think to select it, you are usually already in it.

The useful skill is not knowing where the switch lives. It is knowing how the aircraft behaves once the switch has effectively been thrown for you, and having flown that way on purpose at least once, in calm air, with plenty of room.

Selecting ATTI does not make interference go away, does not restore your position hold and does not improve return-to-home. It removes assistance you may still have been getting. If the aircraft is still holding position, leave it alone.

What ATTI actually is

ATTI is short for attitude mode. The aircraft keeps the two things it can measure on its own and gives up the one it cannot.

Kept — attitudeThe inertial sensors still know which way is up, so the aircraft still self-levels.
Kept — altitudeThe barometer still holds height. It is coarser than GPS-assisted hold and drifts with pressure, but it works.
Kept — headingThe compass still gives the aircraft a heading reference. Yaw control is normal.
Lost — positionNo GNSS position hold. The aircraft no longer knows where it is, so it will not object to being moved.
Lost — brakingNothing stops the aircraft when you centre the sticks. It coasts, then travels with the air.
Lost — return-to-homeWithout a trusted position, a return command has nothing reliable to navigate by.

Everything that surprises pilots in ATTI comes from that single missing item. The controls did not change. What changed is what happens when you stop giving input.

ATTI is not acro — and this is where pilots get it wrong

There is a widely repeated description of ATTI that goes roughly like this: the sticks stop commanding angle and start commanding rotation, so holding the pitch stick forward makes the aircraft keep rotating until it flips; the whole flight model changes; full aerobatics become possible. That description is accurate — but it describes a different mode. It is acro, also called rate or manual mode, and a DJI camera drone does not have it.

ATTI (attitude / angle)Stick position commands a tilt angle, limited to roughly 35°. Release the stick and the aircraft returns to level by itself. It cannot flip.
Acro (rate / manual)Stick position commands a rotation rate. Hold it and the aircraft keeps rotating past vertical — that is the flip. Release it and the aircraft stays wherever it was left, upside down included.

The confusion is understandable, because both modes are described as "manual" and both remove the safety net. But the safety net they remove is not the same one. ATTI removes position assistance and keeps attitude assistance. Acro removes attitude assistance too.

If you fly a DJI FPV or an Avata, your instinct is right — those aircraft do have a Manual mode, it is genuine acro, and everything in the acro row above applies to it. The point is that this is a property of FPV aircraft in Manual, not of ATTI on a camera drone.

Why a camera drone in ATTI will not flip

Two mechanisms prevent it, and they are both still active in ATTI.

  1. The angle limitFull forward stick asks for the maximum permitted tilt, not for continuous rotation. The flight controller reaches that angle and holds it there for as long as you hold the stick. There is no input on a camera drone that asks for more.
  2. Self-levellingCentre the stick and the controller actively commands the aircraft back to level. You do not have to catch it. This is precisely what acro mode removes and ATTI does not.

Tilting also does not make the aircraft climb. Altitude in ATTI is held by the barometer, so the controller adds the thrust needed to keep height as the aircraft leans. Unintended climb while tilting is a manual-throttle behaviour — real, but again from acro, where nothing is holding height for you.

What actually changes in your hands

The differences are subtler than a flip, and more dangerous precisely because they are subtle.

Centring the sticks stops nothingIn GPS flight, hands off means stop. In ATTI, hands off means coast and then drift. This single habit is what catches most pilots.
Braking is a manoeuvreYou have to fly the stop: lean back, hold it, and start earlier than feels necessary. Nothing brakes for you.
Wind becomes the pilotA breeze you never noticed in GPS flight now sets the aircraft's course. It will happily leave at wind speed and never mention it.
Altitude wanders a littleBarometric hold is looser than GPS-assisted hold. Expect small excursions, especially near buildings or in rising air.
Distance grows quietlyBecause the drift is constant and unopposed, a short hesitation turns into real distance. Look at the aircraft, not the screen.
Your eyes are the instrumentOrientation is yours to maintain. Losing sight of the aircraft in ATTI is the actual emergency, not the mode itself.

Flying it — the technique

  1. Fly it like a boat, not a carThink in terms of momentum and current. Inputs start things; they do not stop them. Plan every movement with its stop already in mind.
  2. Lead every stopBegin the counter-input well before the point you want to reach. Overshooting and correcting is normal; panicking about it is what causes crashes.
  3. Small inputs, held longerLarge sharp inputs build speed you then have to remove. Gentle and early beats fast and late.
  4. Fly toward yourself, and downClosing distance and losing height at the same time solves two problems at once and usually walks the aircraft out of the interference.
  5. Keep the nose knownIf you are unsure which way it is facing, yaw gently and watch which way it translates before making a large input.
  6. Land when you have a spot, not when you are finishedA landing you chose beats a landing chosen for you.

Turning ATTI on deliberately

On older aircraft this was simply a switch. The P/A/S selector had A for attitude, once "Multiple Flight Modes" was enabled in the app, and pilots could practise whenever they liked. On current consumer models DJI removed that option: the switch offers Cine, Normal and Sport, and ATTI is entered only automatically, when the aircraft decides it has no usable position.

Because practice matters, some repair shops and experienced owners re-map one of those switch positions — usually Cine — to attitude mode by editing flight-controller parameters with DJI Assistant 2. It is a real practice and it does work on some models. It is also entirely unsupported, and worth going into with clear eyes:

If you do enable it, treat the first flights as test flights: open space, low altitude, no people, plenty of battery, and a clear plan for what you will do if you become disoriented. Label the switch so nobody else selects it by accident.

Practising safely

  1. Pick the boring fieldLarge, open, empty, and flat. No trees to catch drift, no water, no spectators. Boring is the whole requirement.
  2. Wait for still airYour first ATTI flight should not also be your first lesson in wind. Under 10 km/h at the surface, ideally less.
  3. Take height before you take the modeFifteen to twenty metres gives you time to think. Low and slow is the wrong instinct here — altitude is your margin.
  4. Fly a box, then a circleStraight legs with deliberate stops teach braking. Circles teach orientation. Do both until they stop being interesting.
  5. Practise the recovery, not just the flightDeliberately let it drift, then bring it back. The skill you need is not holding a hover; it is fixing a drift you did not intend.
  6. Repeat it before you need itOne session is enough to understand it and not enough to rely on it. Ten minutes a few times a year keeps it real.

The mistakes that actually cause crashes
