ND filters and the 180° shutter rule

Your footage is sharp, correctly exposed and somehow wrong: motion looks stepped, pans judder, and a moving car has crisp edges instead of a natural blur. Nothing is broken. The shutter is simply too fast, and a piece of dark glass is the fix.

Why bright sun ruins motion

A camera exposes each frame for a slice of time. In dim light that slice is long, and anything that moves during it is recorded slightly smeared — which is what our eyes expect from moving pictures. In bright sun the camera protects the exposure by making that slice extremely short, so each frame is a crisp, frozen instant.

Play twenty-five frozen instants per second and the brain notices. Motion stops flowing and starts stepping. It reads as cheap, or as somehow digital, and no amount of colour grading fixes it because the information simply is not there.

This is the one image problem you cannot repair afterwards. Motion blur is captured, not added. Getting it right in the air is the whole reason ND filters exist.

The 180° rule, in plain terms

The convention borrowed from cinema is simple: set your shutter speed to roughly double your frame rate. That produces the amount of blur audiences have been trained by a century of film to read as natural.

24 fps1/48 s — cinema standard. Most cameras offer 1/50, which is close enough.
25 fps1/50 s
30 fps1/60 s
50 fps1/100 s
60 fps1/120 s
120 fps (slow motion)1/240 s — and this is where you will need the strongest filters.

It is a convention, not a law. Deliberately going faster gives a harsh, urgent look that suits action; going slower gives a dreamy smear. But if you are not choosing a look on purpose, double the frame rate is the answer that always works.

What an ND filter actually does

A neutral density filter is grey glass. It removes light evenly across all colours — the "neutral" part — without changing anything else. Less light reaching the sensor means the camera has to expose each frame for longer, which is exactly the slow shutter you wanted.

Strengths are written two ways and it causes endless confusion. ND8 or ND16 counts how much the light is divided. ND 0.9 or ND 1.2 is the same thing on a logarithmic scale. Both describe stops of light removed.

ND4 (0.6)2 stops. Overcast, hazy light, an hour after sunrise.
ND8 (0.9)3 stops. Bright overcast, or sun that keeps hiding.
ND16 (1.2)4 stops. Plain sunny day. This is the one most pilots use most often.
ND32 (1.5)5 stops. Harsh midday sun, or sun over water, snow or sand.
ND64 (1.8)6 stops. Very bright midday, high-frame-rate slow motion, or both.

Choosing one in the field

  1. Set the frame rate firstEverything else follows from it. Decide 24, 25, 30 or 60 before you think about glass.
  2. Set the shutter to double itLock it. This is the number you are protecting.
  3. Set ISO to baseUsually 100. ISO is not the tool for this job; leaving it low keeps the image clean.
  4. Now pick the filter that gives correct exposureFit a filter, look at the meter or the histogram, and step up or down until the exposure is right with the shutter unchanged.
  5. Check again when the light changesA cloud passing over, or forty minutes of the sun dropping, is a filter change. Sunset shoots often need two or three.
Do not fix exposure by changing the shutter. If your aperture is fixed — as it is on most drones — the shutter is the only thing standing between you and stepped motion, and the whole point of the filter is to leave it alone.

When not to fit one

Practical habits that save shots

Fit and remove on the groundNever mid-flight, never with the aircraft powered. A dropped filter into a propeller is an expensive lesson.
Seat it gently and check the gimbalOver-tightening or a badly seated filter throws off gimbal balance, and the aircraft will complain — or worse, not complain and drift.
Keep them in order in the caseYou will be changing them with cold hands in fading light. Fumbling for the right one costs you the shot.
Clean before every fitA fingerprint on a filter is a fingerprint in every frame, and it is invisible on a phone screen in sunlight.
Match filter to conditions, not habitFitting ND16 by reflex on an overcast day pushes ISO up and makes the image worse.
Watch for vignetting on wide lensesThick filter frames can clip the corners on the widest settings. Check a test clip before the real one.

Two of these belong in your pre-flight check rather than your camera bag: fitting the filter and confirming the gimbal still initialises cleanly. Both are ground jobs, and both are much cheaper to discover before the aircraft leaves.

Wind matters here too, in a way that surprises people. A slower shutter records more of everything that moves — including the small vibrations a gimbal is fighting on a gusty day. Strong wind at altitude and a 1/50 shutter can produce a soft frame that looks like a focus problem and is not.

A word on polarisers

A circular polariser is a different tool that is often sold in the same pack. It cuts reflections from water, glass and wet surfaces, and deepens a blue sky at ninety degrees to the sun. It also costs one to two stops, which changes your exposure maths.

On a drone it has one awkward property: the effect depends on the angle to the sun, so it changes as you yaw. A pan that starts with a deep blue sky can end with a pale one. Combined ND/PL filters exist and are useful over water, but use them knowing the sky will shift as you turn.
