The forecast is for your ankles
Almost every weather source reports wind at ten metres above open ground — an aviation convention, and a sensible one for the people it was designed for. Your drone spends its working life two to twelve times higher than that, in air that behaves differently.
The ground is rough. Grass, hedges, buildings and trees drag on the moving air and slow the bottom of it down. Climb away from that friction and the air is freer, faster and smoother. The result is a gradient: not a step change at some altitude, but a steady increase the whole way up.
What the gradient looks like in practice
Those numbers are an illustration, not a promise: the real profile depends on surface roughness, temperature and how stable the air is. The point is the shape of it. The wind does not wait until some altitude to appear, and the difference between what you feel and what the aircraft feels is largest exactly where you like to fly.
Gusts matter more than averages
An average is a comfortable number that no aircraft ever experiences. Your drone flies the peaks. A forecast of 15 km/h gusting 30 is not a 15 km/h day; it is a 30 km/h day with pauses.
How much headroom you actually need
Every aircraft has a maximum speed. Treat it as your total budget: the wind takes its share first, and whatever is left is the speed you can actually use for flying.
- Find your aircraft's real maximumNot the sport-mode headline. Use the speed you can hold in normal mode with a camera payload and a half-charged battery.
- Subtract the wind at your altitudeNot the surface wind. If you cannot see wind at altitude, assume double the surface figure and check that you are still happy.
- Keep at least a third in reserveIf the wind takes more than two-thirds of your maximum speed, you have no authority left for a gust, a correction, or an unexpected return.
- Re-check when you climbThe budget changes with every ten metres. A margin that was fine at 40 m can be gone at 110 m.
The downwind trap
Flying out with the wind behind you is delightful. The aircraft is fast, quiet and efficient, and the distance builds without effort. Every metre of that is a debt, and the return leg pays it at a much worse exchange rate.
- Always fly out into the windSpend the hard part first, while the battery is full and your judgement is fresh.
- Budget the return at doubleA leg that took two minutes downwind can take five or more coming back. Plan on the pessimistic figure.
- Use battery, not distance, as the turnaroundTurn for home on a percentage you decided before take-off, not on how the shot is going.
- Descend to come home when you canLower air is slower air. If the ground below is clear, losing height on the return leg buys you real margin.
A low-battery return-to-home will not rescue a bad downwind decision either. It climbs to your return altitude first, which puts the aircraft into the strongest wind of the whole flight, and then asks it to fight home on the charge that was already running out.
Reading the site before you launch
Buildings and terrain make their own wind
Smooth flow becomes chaotic when it meets an obstacle. Downwind of a building, a treeline or a ridge there is a zone of rotor and rolling air that can be far more violent than the open-field wind that feeds it — and it is invisible.
- Expect disturbed air downwind of any obstacle for several times the obstacle's height.
- Ridges and cliff edges accelerate flow over the top and produce sinking, rolling air behind them. A drone flown over a ridge in wind can meet strong descending air on the far side.
- Gaps between buildings funnel and speed up wind — the same effect that makes some streets unpleasant to walk down.
- Close to a large flat wall the air can be moving straight up or straight down, neither of which your aircraft expects.
Practical limits worth adopting
- Set a personal ceiling and keep itPick a wind-at-altitude figure you will not fly above, decide it at home, and do not renegotiate it on site with a drive already behind you.
- Treat gusts as the numberIf the gust figure is over your limit, the day is over your limit, whatever the average says.
- Fly lower on windy daysAltitude buys you wind. If the shot allows, staying low is the cheapest safety margin available.
- Keep it upwind and closeA drone upwind of you comes home with the wind. A drone downwind of you comes home against it.
- Land early rather than perfectlyA landing with 30% remaining in rising wind is a good decision, not a wasted flight.
