GPS Jamming & Drone Safety

A drone that loses its satellite fix does not fall out of the sky — it changes into a different aircraft. Knowing what that aircraft flies like, before it happens, is the whole difference between an incident and a story you tell later.

What jamming actually is

A GPS satellite transmits from roughly 20,000 km away, and by the time its signal reaches your drone it is astonishingly weak — comparable to seeing a car headlight from across a continent. Any local transmitter putting noise on the same frequency drowns it out with almost no effort. That is jamming: not an attack on your drone specifically, but a wall of noise your receiver cannot hear through.

Because the effect is about proximity and power, a small illegal device in a passing vehicle can deny reception across a surprisingly wide area — and it moves with the vehicle. This is why interference so often appears and disappears without explanation.

Jamming versus spoofing — different problems

Jamming denies. Your receiver stops trusting the signal, the satellite count collapses, and the aircraft admits it does not know where it is. It behaves honestly: it drops position hold and hands control to you.

Spoofing deceives. A false but convincing signal makes the aircraft confident about a position that is wrong. This is more dangerous precisely because nothing looks broken — the drone may fly a "correct" return-to-home straight into somewhere it should never go, or refuse to arm because it believes it is inside a restricted zone hundreds of kilometres away.

Jamming is far more common. Spoofing is rarer, concentrated around sensitive infrastructure and conflict-adjacent regions, and is the reason a return-to-home command should never be treated as an automatic escape.

Where it happens

Recognising it in flight

Interference rarely announces itself cleanly. Learn the pattern instead:

Satellite count fallsA steady count that suddenly drops several satellites in a few seconds is the earliest and clearest warning.
The aircraft stops holding stillYou release the sticks and it keeps travelling. In a stable hover this is unmistakable, and it is your cue to act.
Position drifts against the windMovement that does not match the conditions suggests the aircraft is chasing a position that keeps moving.
A mode change you did not ask forThe controller announces a switch out of GPS-assisted flight. This is the aircraft telling you the truth.
Home point warningsWarnings that the home point was updated or cannot be recorded mean your return-to-home is no longer trustworthy.
Compass or heading errorsWhen heading reference degrades alongside position, circling behaviour becomes likely.

ATTI mode — how the aircraft changes

Without a usable satellite fix the aircraft falls back to attitude mode: it still knows which way is up, using its inertial sensors, and it still holds altitude using barometric pressure. What it no longer knows is where it is. Everything that follows comes from that single loss.

Position holdGone. The aircraft is a boat on a river — the wind carries it and it never objects.
Releasing the sticksIt does not stop. It coasts, then drifts with the air mass indefinitely.
Braking distanceMuch longer. You have to fly the stop yourself, and start it earlier than instinct suggests.
Return to homeUnavailable or unreliable. Do not rely on it to rescue you.
Orientation awarenessEntirely on you. There is no map to correct a wrong assumption about which way the nose points.
Wind rejectionNone. A breeze you never noticed in GPS flight now sets the aircraft's course.
This is not a failure state — it is how every drone flew before satellite assistance became ordinary, and it is entirely flyable. It only feels catastrophic to pilots who have never done it deliberately.

What to do when it happens

  1. Stop climbing and stop travelling awayAltitude and distance are the two things making everything harder. Reduce both.
  2. Take manual control immediatelyDo not wait to see whether it recovers, and do not spam mode switches.
  3. Resist the urge to hit return-to-homeWith a degraded fix that command can fly the aircraft somewhere worse. Manual flight is the reliable option.
  4. Fix the aircraft in your vision and keep it thereIn attitude mode your eyes are the primary navigation instrument. Losing sight is the real emergency.
  5. Fly it toward yourself and descendBring it closer and lower simultaneously. Interference is usually strongest at one location — moving out often restores the fix on its own.
  6. Know where the nose is pointingIf you are unsure, yaw gently and observe which way it translates before committing to a large input.
  7. Land as soon as you have a safe spotA landing you chose beats a landing chosen for you. Do not push the flight to finish the shot.

Measures that work — before you fly

  1. Check reports for the areaInterference clusters. If pilots have reported problems where you are heading, plan a closer, lower flight or pick another spot.
  2. Wait for a strong, stable lockDo not launch on a satellite count that is still climbing or fluctuating. Thirty extra seconds on the ground costs nothing.
  3. Set and verify the home point deliberatelyConfirm it recorded where you are standing, and set a return altitude that clears everything between you and the aircraft.
  4. Practise attitude mode on purposeIn a large open field, with plenty of altitude, switch it on and fly circuits until it is boring. Muscle memory built in calm conditions is what you will have in bad ones.
  5. Take off away from metal and reflectionRebar, vehicle roofs, metal railings and building faces all corrupt the initial fix and the compass reference.
  6. Calibrate the compass in a clean placeNot on a car, not on a manhole cover, not next to a fence.
  7. Watch space weather tooGeomagnetic disturbance degrades the same systems. A quiet day is a safer day for long-range flight.
  8. Keep the aircraft close in suspect areasRange is a luxury. Where interference is plausible, fly the shot you can recover by eye.
  9. Report what you experienceEvery confirmed report makes the next pilot's pre-flight better. This hazard exists in no official feed.

A note on legality

Operating jamming equipment is illegal in essentially every jurisdiction, and interfering with navigation signals is treated seriously because aviation depends on them. Nothing here is guidance on producing interference — this is entirely about recognising it, flying through it and reporting it. If you suspect deliberate jamming near critical infrastructure, it is worth reporting to your national authority as well as to other pilots.
